Mgahinga Gorilla National Park – Uganda’s Smallest Park, Richest Experience

🦍 Gorilla Trekking – Meet the Nyakagezi Family

Mgahinga is one of only two places in Uganda where you can trek endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The Nyakagezi Gorilla Family is the resident habituated group in the park. Unlike their counterparts in Bwindi, this family is known for being more mobile but equally photogenic and engaging.

At Kwezi Adventures, we arrange guided gorilla trekking experiences that begin early in the morning at the Ntebeko Visitor Centre. The trek takes you through bamboo forests, ancient montane terrain, and sometimes steep volcanic slopes. It’s challenging but deeply rewarding – standing a few meters from a silverback gorilla, seeing his calm demeanor, and feeling that primal connection is something you’ll never forget.

🔑 Pro Tip: Gorilla trekking permits for Mgahinga are limited, so we advise booking at least 3–6 months in advance, especially in peak seasons (June–September, December–February).

🐒 Golden Monkey Tracking – The Other Primate Treasure

Mgahinga is the only park in Uganda where you can see golden monkeys, an endangered primate species endemic to the Albertine Rift. These playful, energetic creatures with their bright golden-orange fur are found in the bamboo forests at the park’s base.

Golden monkey tracking is less strenuous than gorilla trekking and offers excellent photographic opportunities. It’s also a family-friendly option, and our team ensures a smooth experience, from briefings to permits and guided excursions.

⛰ Volcano Hiking – Conquer the Virunga Volcanoes

Mgahinga lies within the Virunga Mountain Range, which stretches across Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC. Three of the range’s eight volcanoes are located within the park:

• Mount Sabinyo (3,669m) – Known as the “Old Man’s Teeth,” its rugged summit marks the meeting point of Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo.

• Mount Gahinga (3,474m) – A gentler cone, ideal for moderate hikers.

• Mount Muhabura (4,127m) – The highest and most demanding hike in the park, offering views as far as Lake Edward and the Rwenzori Mountains on a clear day.

Getting There: Mgahinga is accessible via:

• A 10-hour drive from Kampala via Kabale and Kisoro.

• Daily domestic flights to Kisoro Airstrip from Entebbe (we arrange pickups).

• 2-3 hours by road from Kigali, Rwanda – a popular option for international travelers flying into Kigali.

Best Time to Visit:
Mgahinga is a year-round destination, but the dry seasons (June–August and December–February) offer the best hiking and tracking conditions.
