Lake Mburo National Park
Lake Mburo National Park – Zebras, Biking Safaris & Untouched Beauty
As a tour consultant at Kwezi Adventures, I often recommend Lake Mburo National Park to travelers looking for a short, accessible, and unique wildlife experience in Uganda. Conveniently located just 4 hours from Kampala, this park is a perfect weekend escape or a great first/last stop on longer itineraries.
Lake Mburo may be small in size, but it packs a punch with zebra herds, biking safaris, boat cruises, and one-of-a-kind nature experiences not found elsewhere in Uganda.
🦓 Zebra Capital of Uganda
Lake Mburo is the only park in southern Uganda where you can see zebras and lots of them. Herds of Burchell’s zebras roam freely alongside impalas, elands, topis, buffaloes, and giraffes across the park’s rolling savannahs and acacia woodlands.
Unlike larger parks, Lake Mburo offers a closer, more intimate wildlife experience. You won’t be jostling with dozens of other tourists here you’ll often have the sightings all to yourself.
Wildlife Highlights:
Zebras in large herds across the open plains
Rare elands (Africa’s largest antelope)
Giraffes, warthogs, bushbucks, and waterbucks
Leopards and hyenas (more active at night)
Over 350 bird species, including African finfoot, papyrus gonolek, and fish eagles
🚴 Biking Safaris – Cycle Among Wildlife
What sets Lake Mburo apart from most other African parks is the freedom to explore on two wheels. At Kwezi Adventures, we offer guided biking safaris where guests can pedal through wildlife-rich areas no fences, no vehicles, just you, your guide, and nature.
It’s an adrenaline-pumping, yet peaceful way to connect with the environment. You’ll cycle past herds of impalas, zebras, and warthogs, hear birdsong in the bush, and soak in views of the lake and savannahs at your own pace.
We offer:
Morning and afternoon cycling safaris
Bike & boat combo tours
Custom biking adventures for active travelers
All experiences are led by trained rangers for safety and interpretation.
🐎 Horseback Riding & Walking Safaris
Lake Mburo is also the only national park in Uganda that allows horseback safaris a unique and gentle way to move with the animals, without a vehicle. Our horseback rides, in partnership with Mihingo Lodge, offer an unforgettable close-up with wildlife.
Prefer to keep your feet on the ground? Our walking safaris, led by expert rangers, take you to areas where you can track animals, study footprints, and feel truly immersed in the wild.
🚤 Boat Cruises on Lake Mburo
The lake itself is a haven for hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds. A boat cruise is the best way to explore the park’s aquatic life, with excellent chances of spotting African fish eagles, kingfishers, and the elusive African finfoot.
We often pair boat cruises with picnic lunches, sunset tours, or combo game drive packages.
