GENERAL QUESTIONS

  • Yes, most visitors require a tourist visa. You can apply online for a single-entry visa (valid 90 days, approx. US $50) or for an East Africa Tourist Visa (covers Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda; valid 90 days, approx. US $100)

  • Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your entry date into Uganda .

  • Some countries are visa-exempt check the official Uganda Immigration portal to see if your nationality qualifies.

  • A yellow fever vaccination is mandatory. Other advised immunizations include hepatitis A/B, typhoid, meningitis, tetanus, and malaria prophylaxis. Consult your physician before travel

  • Yes. Due to the high malaria risk, preventive medication and mosquito net use are strongly advised especially in forested and lowland regions.

  • Uganda is generally considered stable and safe, especially in key tourist areas. Avoid certain border regions (e.g., North near South Sudan) and follow local safety guidance.

  • Female travelers may receive extra attention. Stay vigilant, dress modestly, avoid walking alone at night, and politely refuse persistent advances.

  • Credit cards (Visa or Mastercard) are accepted in major hotels and cities. ATMs are available in urban centers rural areas may lack card access, so bring cash (USD preferred).

  • The local currency is the Ugandan shilling (UGX). While USD, GBP, and EUR may be accepted, most day‑to‑day transactions use UGX.

  • Tipping is appreciated. In hotels and restaurants, tip about 5–10%. Guides and drivers: USD 5‑15 per day, depending on service and group size.

  • The optimal times are during the dry seasons: June–August and December–February. Wildlife watching, trekking, and gorilla tracking are easier during these months.

  • Uganda boasts at least 10 national parks and around 12 reserves, offering diverse wildlife and habitats for safaris and trekking.

  • Mountain gorilla trekking is available in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

  • A gorilla trekking permit is approximately US $700 for foreign non-resident adults. Cost varies slightly for residents or citizens.

  • A trek can take 2–6 hours depending on terrain and gorilla location. Time spent with gorillas is limited to one hour per rules. Porters and chairs can be arranged if needed.

  • English is the official language, Swahili is the second official, and Luganda is widely spoken. Many locals are multilingual.
