Semuliki National Park
Semuliki National Park – Uganda’s Rainforest Wonderland
As a tour consultant at Kwezi Adventures, I often recommend Semuliki National Park to travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure in Uganda. Tucked away in the Albertine Rift Valley near Fort Portal, Semuliki is a richly biodiverse park where West African jungle meets East African savannah. It's one of Uganda’s most unique ecosystems, known for its steaming hot springs, rare birds, lush forests, and cultural diversity.
🏞️ A Unique Tropical Rainforest in East Africa
Semuliki is one of the few true lowland tropical rainforests in East Africa, stretching over 220 square kilometers. It’s an extension of the Ituri Forest in the Congo Basin, making it biologically rich and ecologically significant. Unlike other Ugandan parks dominated by savannahs, Semuliki offers a deep jungle experience filled with towering trees, chattering monkeys, and the sounds of exotic bird calls.
🔥 The Famous Sempaya Hot Springs – Nature’s Drama Unfolded
The Sempaya Hot Springs are the most iconic feature of the park and a major highlight on any tour. There are two springs:
Male Hot Spring ("Bintente") – a scenic pool in a lush swamp
Female Hot Spring ("Nyasimbi") – a violent geyser that shoots boiling water up to 2 meters high
The water is hot enough to boil eggs or bananas in minutes, and this has become a fun activity for visitors. These geothermal wonders are not just a natural phenomenon but also hold deep cultural significance for the Bwamba people, who believe the springs are sacred.
At Kwezi Adventures, we include guided walks to both hot springs with cultural storytelling to enrich the experience.
🦜 Birding Paradise – Over 440 Species
If you’re a birdwatcher, Semuliki is a dream come true. The park is home to over 440 bird species, many of which are West and Central African forest endemics rarely found elsewhere in East Africa. Notable species include:
Long-tailed Hawk
Congo Serpent Eagle
Black Dwarf Hornbill
Nkulengu Rail
Lyre-tailed Honeyguide
With the guidance of our expert birding guides, we organize multi-day birding tours in Semuliki and the nearby Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve.
🐒 Wildlife & Chimpanzees in Toro-Semliki Reserve
Though dense forest makes wildlife viewing more challenging, Semuliki is home to:
Forest elephants and buffalos
Chimpanzees and other primates such as grey-cheeked mangabeys, de Brazza monkeys, and olive baboons
Duikers and bush babies
For better chances of seeing wildlife, we often extend our itineraries to the Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve, located just outside the park. Here, open savannah landscapes provide better views of antelopes, warthogs, and even chimps in the Mugiri River forest corridor.
🛖 Cultural Experiences – Bwamba, Bakonzo & Batwa
Semuliki is also a cultural melting pot, with three distinct communities living around the park:
Bwamba people – custodians of the hot springs
Bakonzo tribe – known for their farming traditions on the mountain slopes
Batwa (Pygmy) community – Uganda’s original forest dwellers, with deep ancestral ties to the region
We offer ethical cultural visits where you can interact with local communities through dance, storytelling, and craft-making supporting sustainable tourism.

Rainy seasons (March–May, September–November) bring out the rainforest’s beauty and bird activity, but trails may be slippery perfect for adventurous travelers.
